Jul 07, 2004 · For those of you who don't know 208V is 120V 3 phase line to line. Just about the only thing common between a single and 3 phase motor is that there is a shaft sticking out of the end of the motor that turns. A 3 phase motor is a completely different animal than a single phase motor and you most definately cannot substitute one for the other.

120/208 is common in buildings with a large single phase load, ie. lighting and a limited 3 phase load. Many schools are this way.
